Puyallup Fair counting on cows and characters

Tribnet.com - News: "Pigs have done well in the past, but last year's crowds were kind of poky. So this year the Puyallup Fair is counting on cows to help bring up its declining attendance.

And the bovines will have support from a herd of live-action cartoon characters to attract young families to the nation's sixth-largest fair, which runs Friday through Sept. 26.

When fairgoers walk through the gate, they'll notice this year's logo on the program pamphlet - a cow hauling a giant pumpkin in a rusty pickup truck.

Although not scientific, animals featured in the fair's logo seem to correlate with attendance. Figures from the past 20 years show that pigs, featured seven times during that period, have yielded the top four crowds in fair history in 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1996."
