Interview with Joaquin Romay, Injinji Toe Socks

powered by ODEO
Dr. Lotchie Kerch, Z-CoiL Pain Relief Footwear Seattle, and I talk with Joaquin Romay, product designer and founder of Injinji Toe Socks.

SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE (JUNE 2007)

Like so many creations, this one was born out of necessity. Or in this case, dirty laundry. Brothers, Randuz and Joaquin Romay were hiking in Oregon eight years ago when Randuz exhausted his supply of clean socks. Joaquin, a Berkenstock salesman at the time, suggested that Randuz try a pair of his rainbow-colored toe socks.

The next morning the brothers headed off on a trail run, their toes snugly and individually tucked into multi-hued hosiery.

"Somewhere in the middle of that run we stopped and said, 'Hey, how do those toe socks feel?'" recalled Joaquin, now 33.

"It feels like I'm barefooted," said Randuz, 34.

Sitting around the campfire that night, the brothers - renaissance types who surf, play music and stage photo exhibits - could only talk toe socks.

"From that evening on," Joaquin said, "that was the rest of our lives." (Read More)

Next week, the second part of this interview will be broadcast live on this blog. If you are interested in participating in the online radio talk show via phone, IM or GoogleTalk, let me know through comments.

Randuz Romay, Injinji's Marketing Director, produced and directed this short video that showcases people talking about using toe socks.

Bodies Back in Motion

Z-CoiL® footwear restores mobility to arthritis sufferers
Arthritis is a painful, often crippling condition that keeps many people from doing the things they enjoy, or even need to do every day. Nearly one in five adults in this country are afflicted with arthritis, a term encompassing more than 100 different degenerative diseases that affect the areas in or around joints, causing pain, swelling, and loss of movement.
Joint pain and stiffness can make movement difficult, yet it’s very important for those suffering from arthritis to maintain as much flexibility and muscle strength as possible in order to protect their joints.
Z-CoiL® footwear can help. The shock-absorbing Z-CoiL® heels, along with thick and resilient cushioning at the forefoot of the shoes, greatly reduce the sort of jarring impact that is so hard on aching joints. The coil also returns energy of motion to the wearer by up to 50%, putting that extra “spring” in your step, while the rocker-bottom soles of the shoes promotes a smooth, rolling gait that gently propels you forward. In Z-CoiL® shoes, walking can actually become a pleasure again, rather than a pain.
In fact, Z-CoiL® shoes have been recommended in Arthritis Today’s Walking Guide as “a good choice for people who have heel pain,” due to the way they absorb shock. They are also described as being especially good for heavy walkers and over-pronators, or people whose feet roll inward when they walk.
“When I was given a pair of Z-CoiL® shoes as a Christmas gift,” observes Pamela, a jeweler in Las Vegas, Nevada, “little did I know my health would be the real gift. Within the next month, my arthritis pain was gone.”
Pamela had suffered from both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) since she was 20. Her job requires her to be on her feet 12 to 14 hours a day, and every joint in her body ached. “When I first went in for the shoes, I was all bent over and in pain,” she remembers. “Now I am standing straight and tall with no pain.”
Alex, in retail sales in Overland Park, Kansas, has a similar story. “I was having severe problems with arthritis in both knees—so much so that I could barely get through a day at work.” Then he read an article in his local paper about Z-CoiL® Pain Relief Footwear™, and Alex decided to give the unusual shoes a try.
“After wearing the shoes for a couple of weeks,” he reports, “I found the pain and stiffness had lessened enough that I could start walking on a regular basis again—at first just a little, and then more frequently and on longer walks.” As a result, he says, “I’m healthier now than I was in my 20s and the arthritis is a non-issue.”
Steve, an engineer in Frisco, Texas, attributes the pain relief he and his wife, Kathy, have experienced to the unique design of their Z-CoiL® footwear. “As an engineer, I can appreciate that springs behave in a unique manner of physics known as Hooke’s law: the force exerted is a linear function of extension or compression. In other words, the spring slows your step down with a slow, constant force, rather than an abrupt stop.”
Steve once used a cane and had serious bouts with rheumatoid arthritis that lasted at least a week. Now with Z-CoiL® shoes, he believes his attacks are fewer and less severe. “I can only attribute this to the Z-CoiL® shoes and the cushion that they add to every step.” Kathy, meanwhile, has suffered for years from chronic back pain due to a car accident, but Z-CoiL® shoes have helped her get back on her feet too.
“Both my wife and I can now stand in line at the grocery store, something we could not tolerate before due to pain,” says Steve. “Now I can stand in line and I am not in pain at all.”

Pain Relief Product: Topical Analgesia

Biofreeze

The gel applied from a tube or pump bottle affords the doctor the opportunity to create a more thorough application by massaging the effected area during application.

Through massage the patient benefits from an increased blood flow and warming of the region at the cellular level for better absorption of the Biofreeze product.

This hands on application also reinforces patient touch which has been shown to be very important in the healing cycle.

"Biofreeze provides the working person relief to continue through the day, to be able to sleep at night, and continue to be active."
Gerard Cronin, DC. CCEP

"I had to write to tell you what a great product this is. The first time I used Biofreeze it gave me excellent results!"

Wayi is now here

Now caring Bamboo socks Men's Ivory and Women's Black and Ivory more to come soon...

Wayi clothing is made of 100% bamboo.

Bamboo is a sustainable resource that thrives naturally without the use of pesticides or the need for fertilizer. Bamboo can grow as much as18 inches over night. The bamboo used in the production of textiles is plantation-raised bamboo. The significance of plantation raised bamboo is that the harvesting of the bamboo does not interfere with the habitat of Panda bears.

Because of its hollow fiber, bamboo has unusual breathing capabilities.

The fiber is filled with micro gaps and micro-holes which allows for better moisture absorption and ventilation than other fibers.

Bamboo fiber can absorb and evaporate perspiration quickly. Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial because of its bio-agent bamboo “kun” which does not allow the growth of bacteria on the fiber and therefore eliminates the need for anti-microbial chemical treatment (which is known to cause allergic reaction). When you perspire your clothing will not pick up the odor of your perspiration.

Bamboo fabric is anti-static and does not cling.

Bamboo is 100% biodegradable.

Bamboo apparel products offer the following unique benefits and qualities to its customers:

Softness:
It feels like cashmere or silk, it is extremely soft.

Comfort
Bamboo apparel is comfortable, more breathable than cotton, fast drying, moisture-wicking, and thermal regulating. It will keep you cooler in the summer, and you can layer it to be warmer in the winter.

Bacteria Free
Bamboo fiber contains a natural agent, that prevents the growth of bacteria, thus prevents odor.

Natural
Bamboo is one of the world’s most prolific and fastest growing plants. It is inherently organic and is grown without pesticides or chemicals, and is 100% biodegradable.

Easy Care
No dry cleaning necessary. Launder in cool water on Gentle Cycle and tumble dry low. Stain removers may be used for stubborn stains. The use of bleach or liquid fabric softener is not recommended. Dryer sheets may be used. Remove from dryer promptly or line dry.

A quantitative antibacterial capability test was performed by the China Industrial Testing Center (CTITC) from July 7th 2003 thru July 11, 2003. One hundred percent Bamboo Fabric was tested over a 24-hour incubation period with bacterial strain type Staphylococcus aureous. After the 24-hour period the numbers of live bacteria were counted in each sample. The results showed that 100% bamboo fabric exhibits 99.8% antibacterial kill rate.

Studies by the Japan Textile Inspection Association (JTIA) revealed long-term antibacterial efficacy of bamboo fabric. The quantitative test method JISL 1902 was performed using 100% bamboo fabric that had been washed industrially 50 times. Incubation over a 24-hour period with bacterial strain type MRSA Staphylococcus IID 1677 was followed by a count of live bacteria on each sample. Results showed that bamboo fabric showed antibacterial efficacy (greater than) 70% after 50 industrial washings. (Results obtained from Shanghai Tenbro Bamboo Textile LtD)

Antimicrobial and Antibacterial Textile Benefits:

Fifty individuals suffering from the fungal infection tinea pedis commonly called athlete’s foot were given antimicrobial, antibacterial socks. All fifty test subjects reported the disappearance of the burning and itching that accompanies athlete’s foot within 1-2 days of wearing the socks. Within 2-6 days the blistering and sores characteristic of athlete’s foot disappeared and the skin returned to normal. None of the fifty individuals reported any adverse effects.
