Bellevue Dermatologist Shares Z-CoiL Experience and Offers Timely Advice

Carla Bauman, MD is a repeat customer at "Your 2 Feet", formerly Z-CoiL of Seattle.

Dr. Bauman says: "As a dermatologist, I am on my feet for many hours per day. I specialize in treating skin cancer. I was looking for a solution for relieving my knee, back and neck pain that I get after a long work week."

Dr. Bauman found out about the Z-CoiL's from a long term friend who is a head and neck surgeon in Bellevue. Dr. Bauman says,"I got turned on to the Z-CoiL's 3 years ago and I have never looked back. My knee, back and neck pain are nearly resolved, unless I don't wear my Z-CoiLs."

She continues: "As of today, I now have 7 pairs of Z-CoiL styles: Mary Janes; with the purchase today I have 2 pairs of clogs (my dog chewed up my first pair); 2 pairs of Tias (T-strap) in black and blue; with my purchase today I have 2 pairs of the Z-breeze. I bought all of my shoes from "Your 2 Feet". My priority is comfort at the end of the day."

Dr. Bauman follows in the footsteps of her father's profession. He was a prominent dermatologist. She thinks he might have relieved so many of his back pain issues if he had worn the Z-CoiL's.

Dr. Bauman stresses the importance of having your skin professionally evaluated for suspicious signs of skin cancer. For instance this might be a mole or skin raised that shows any of the following characteristics:
1. Asymmetry (one side different than the other)
2. Borders irregular (not smooth borders)
3. Color variation (change in color)
4. Diameter greater than 6 mm.
5. Evolving (any change of any kind)
The best practice is to avoid the sun, wear a chemical free mineral based sunscreen on exposed areas, and use skin protection from the sun's damaging UV rays such a hat and/or an umbrella.

Dr. Bauman is an advocate for you to "Take care of your feet and your skin".

Carla Bauman, MD is accepting new patients for evaluation and treatment of skin cancer or cosmetic surgery.

Plantar Fascitis and Back Pain Relief For The Rice's

Jeff and Kathy came in to "Your 2 Feet", formerly Z-CoiL of Seattle, to buy their 7th and 3rd pair of Z-CoiL Pain Relief Footwear respectively.
Jeff has been wearing his Z-CoiL's for 10 years because they help relieve his back pain from disc deterioration.
Jeff has been working for 34 years as a machinist making bakery equipment for Belshaw Manufacturing. This work entails a lot of bending and, he says, "I got old". He wears his steel toe Z-Walkers at work.
Jeff has two years to retire and is looking forward to traveling the US in his RV. So far they have taken two week road trips to Arizona and other RV parks locally. Arizona was so hot on his Arizona trip the glue "let go" on the seams of his Z-walker shoes.
Jeff and Kathy live in Bonney Lake. Jeff first heard about the Z-CoiL's from his chiropractor who recommended them. He purchased his first pair of Z-CoiLs 10 years ago from the now closed Puyallup store. He tried the Z-CoiL's and "loved them". After a month adjustment period, he noticed the Z-CoiL Pain Relief Footwear helped his back. He says, " I recommend the Z-CoiLs to anyone who asks about them, like the sales clerks in stores. I tell them they really helped me and everyone should wear them. I wouldn't wear anything else."
The 6th and 7th pair he just bought are the Black Freedom athletic shoes and the sidewinder sandal. As mentioned earlier he owns the steel toe z-walkers and a few pairs without a steel toes.
Kathy Rice bought her first pair of Z-CoiL's one year ago when she saw how much relief her husband got and she was seeking relief. When she walks any distance she wears the Z-CoiL since they help relieve her plantar fascitis pain. She works in a refridgerated truck bending a lot on a ridged surface so she is unable to wear the shoes at work. She wanted a summer and a winter pair so she added a black freedom and a sidewinder sandal to her pain relief collection of Z-CoiL's.
Kathy and Jeff have discovered the pain relieving features of the Z-CoiL Pain Relief Footwear and are eager to share their story. Come tell us your experiences so we can add them to the growing list of success stories from "Your 2 Feet" located at the base of Capital Hill in Seattle-1201 Pine St. 206-838-7338

Evaluation and Prevention of Diabetic Neuropathy

Early findings and diagnoses can direct your podiatrist on the most expedient treatment and prevention of complications. When you notice that your foot feels "different", seek immediate attention, especially if you are a diabetic.

Diabetic Neuropathy is a debilitating disorder that occurs in nearly 50 percent of patients with diabetes. It is a late finding in type 1 diabetes but can be an early finding in type 2 diabetes. The primary types of diabetic neuropathy are sensorimotor and autonomic. Patients may present with only one type of diabetic neuropathy or may develop combinations of neuropathies (e.g., distal symmetric polyneuropathy and autonomic neuropathy). Distal symmetric polyneuropathy is the most common form of diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy also can cause motor deficits, silent cardiac ischemia, orthostatic hypotension, vasomotor instability, hyperhidrosis, gastroparesis, bladder dysfunction, and sexual dysfunction. Strict glycemic control and good daily foot care are key to preventing complications of diabetic neuropathy.

Diabetic neuropathy can affect any part of the nervous system. This nerve disorder should be suspected in all patients with type 2 diabetes and in patients who have had type 1 diabetes for more than five years. In some instances, patients with diabetic neuropathy have few complaints, but their physical examination reveals mild to moderately severe sensory loss. Idiopathic neuropathy has been found to precede the onset of type 2 diabetes or to occur as an early finding in the disease

If you have diabetes keep educated about proper foot care and check your feet daily.
Enroll in the Medicare Diabetic Shoe Program that allows for reimbursement for qualified diabetics and qualified shoes.
You should have an annual foot examination by a podiatrist or other health care professional.

Diabetic Serious Complication and Prevention

Rare Diabetes Foot Complication Becoming More Common
Few patients or care providers know about this limb-threatening foot condition, or its warning signs:

At first, Kim Schraeder didn't worry about the swelling in her left foot. After all, it was pulling double-duty while her other foot recovered from surgery.

"I have a high threshold for pain," she says. "It hurt to walk on it, but I didn't think it was serious."

Just a year earlier, doctors diagnosed the 48-year-old mother of four with diabetes. The recent surgery on her right foot corrected a bunion to prevent reoccurring diabetic ulcers. As Schraeder's bunion recovery moved forward, her left foot moved outwards. Her ankle bent inwards. The foot grew so swollen none of her shoes fit. The skin was warm and red. Schraeder started to worry.

During a follow-up visit with her podiatrist, she spoke up. Her doctor took one look and said, "We have a problem."

Schraeder was diagnosed with a rare diabetic complication called Charcot foot. It is estimated to affect less than one percent of people with diabetes. Now doctors with the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons say Charcot foot's prevalence appears to be growing as more Americans get diabetes. Some worry that few patients - or their diabetes care providers - seem to know about this complication or its warning signs.

Charcot foot is a sudden softening of the foot's bones caused by severe neuropathy, or nerve damage, a common diabetic foot complication. It can trigger an avalanche of problems, including joint loss, fractures, collapse of the arch, massive deformity, ulcers, amputation, and even death. As the disorder progresses, the bottom of the foot can become convex, bulging like the hull of a ship. Since most people with Charcot cannot feel pain in their lower extremities, they continue walking on the foot, causing further injury.

Charcot cannot be reversed, but its destructive effects can be stopped if the complication is detected early.

The symptoms of Charcot foot appear suddenly. They include warm and red skin, swelling and pain. A person with diabetes who has a red, hot, swollen foot or ankle requires emergency medical care because these can also be symptoms of deep vein thrombosis or an infection.

Doctors say Charcot's ambiguous symptoms can lead to misdiagnosis. Since patients don't feel pain, doctors may presume the swelling is due to infection and prescribe antibiotics. Meanwhile the patient continues walking on a foot that is collapsing.

"More people with diabetes, their families and their care providers need to know about Charcot foot," says J. T. Marcoux. DPM, FACFAS, one of only a handful of Massachusetts foot and ankle surgeons who performs Charcot foot reconstructions. "When I diagnose a patient with this complication, I telephone their primary care doctor and educate them about it as well."

Schraeder says no one told her about Charcot. "It was not even in my vocabulary," she says. "If someone had educated me, I think I would have been more aware that I had a major problem."

But educating patients and their care providers is only half the battle. Keith Jacobson, DPM, FACFAS is the Houston foot and ankle surgeon who diagnosed and reconstructed Schraeder's Charcot foot. He and Marcoux say there's little they can do when patients are apathetic or in "diabetic denial."

"I've had patients who are literally blind, on dialysis and neuropathic who refuse to admit they have diabetes," says Jacobson. "I have seen horrific deformities with this condition."

Marcoux tells of a middle-aged woman he diagnosed with Charcot. Typically the first order of business is to immobilize the foot by putting the patient in a boot or cast, and to keep the patient off the foot by using crutches or a wheelchair. Marcoux says his patient was "in massive denial" about her Charcot diagnosis.

"I tried to get her off the foot, but she wouldn't do it" he says, "Six months later she came in with a bone infection and a gaping hole in her foot."

Foot and ankle surgeons expect to see more patients like that as diabetes rates soar.

Today, Schraeder is back to walking on both feet. Three months after her Charcot diagnosis, she underwent reconstructive surgery. Her recovery included spending three months in a "halo" external fixator where a series of pins and screws are placed into the bones and connected to clamps and rods outside the skin. She then wore a custom shoe boot for nearly a year.

The experience taught her four children to appreciate their mother a lot more, since all the cooking, cleaning, and laundry fell on their shoulders.

"They're all like hawks now," she says. "If I'm sitting here with bare feet, they'll look to make sure they're not red, hot and swollen."

Conveniently Dr. Kerch, ABPS certified and FACFS member, is accepting new patients. Due to her experience treating diabetic complications over the past 28 years, she is very invested in early diagnoses, prevention and treatment. Diabetic Self-Exam and Dr. Kerch Starts Your Process for Medicare Shoe Reimbursement Program

Foot Care For Diabetics
A regular self-exam will show indications for further follow-up:

1. Balance. A good test for balance involves standing on one foot, with your arms out to the side and your eyes closed. If you are less than 30 years old, you should be able to balance for 15 seconds, 30-40 years old for 12 seconds, 40-50 years old for 10 seconds and over 50 years old for seven seconds. This can be improved with exercises.

2. Circulation. Look at the color of your toes. Are they red, pink, purple or blue? Press down on the nail of your big toe until the color blanches. Now let go and allow the blood flow to return to your toe. The return of normal color should take 2-5 seconds in a person with average circulation.
At Your 2 Feet you can choose from the Jobst styles of support stockings. Support stockings are to be put on first thing in the morning so the compression will help pump the circulation back to your heart all day long. If you have haven't tried Jobst support hose yet, they are different than other brands of support hose.

3. Flexibility. How flexible are your toes? Try to pick up a marble or a small dish towel. To test your ankle flexibility, hang your heel off of a stair. Now let the heel go below the level of the stair. If this causes pain, stop the test. If your heel goes below the level of the stair without causing strain in your calf, that is a goof sign. If there is some strain, this can be improved with flexibility exercises.

4.Pain. There should be no pain in the average foot.

5. Sensation. Take a pencil eraser and lightly run it on the top, bottom and both sides of your feet. The sensation should feel equal in all quadrants. It may tickle on the bottom of the feet. That is normal. The last paragraph outlines how Dr. Kerch works with Your 2 Feet in fitting you with the proper diabetic footwear.

6. Skin. Check your skin for calluses, blisters or areas of irritation. Stand next to your shoes. Are they shaped like your feet or are they causing areas of constriction that may result in calluses, blisters or irritation? Put your hand inside your shoe. Are there seams, tacks or rough places in the shoe that correspond to the areas of irritation, calluses or blisters on your feet?

The following items may result in burns and you should NOT be using:
A. Hot tap water or super-heated water from the "Insta hot" faucet used on towels which are wrapped in additional layers of towels, chucks, or blankets.

B. Towels, rice packs or anything else heated in the microwave that is intended for food (temperature limit is not controlled; it’s also a fire risk).

C. A disposable latex glove filled with hot tap water. Even if mixed with cold tap water, the glove can burst and spill on the patient causing a burn.

7. If you have diabetes, keep educated about proper foot care and check your feet daily.
You should have an annual foot examination by a podiatrist or other health care professional.

Conveniently Dr. Kerch, ABPS certified and FACFS member is accepting new patients. Due to her experience treating diabetic complications over the years, she is very invested in early diagnoses, prevention and treatment. Donald Bordner Now Has 16 Pairs of Z-CoiL's!

If Your 2 Feet had a Hall of Fame, Don would be named to it.

Pictured is our customer of the month Don Bordner, a 75 year old called by his co-workers Don Juan. He charms the elderly woman at the dances he goes to. One of the women said, "I've got a live one!."

With the 3 new pairs of shoes he just bought here, he has 16 pairs of Z-CoiL's. Today he bought 2 pairs of Santa Fe's and a pair of Taos Zipper shoes. His first pair was purchased when Z-CoiL first came to this area. He met Al Gallegos, the Z-CoiL inventor, at the Bellevue stores grand opening. (Bellevue's Z-CoiL store closed).

The variety of Z-CoiL's is for the opera, dancing, driving metro buses, walking, and running around Greenlake.

He is a role model for graceful aging. His secret? He credits Z-CoiL's and tells all his co-workers Z-CoiL's are why his knees don't give out and why he has more zip than men half his age.

As a metro bus driver he is required to wear his Z-CoiL's with covered coils (all Z-CoiL shoes with open coils can be converted to covered coils). The "official policy" of Metro says- No self-respecting bus driver would be allowed to show his springs. Until the Z-CoiL wearing bus drivers took Metro to civil court, they were not allowed to wear the Z-CoiL's at all. They were concerned the coils might get caught in the pedal. Don says," We drive with our toes, so why is there a problem?"

Don is the Renaissance man epitomizing we are as young as our heart.

Judy Ackerman is a Loyal Everett Customer

Judy came from No. Everett to shop at Your 2 Feet, formerly Z-CoiL of Seattle. She's been wearing Z-CoiL's for 5 years, but also wears our medical grade crocs. She went to Ballard for her first pair of Z-CoiL's, the Freedom Black. Last year she came to Your 2 Feet to purchase a pair of Mary Jane's. Added to her collection is a black sandal. Her discovery of how the shoes work was from people wearing them. She stopped to ask about them and where they got them. Pam came with her today and bought a pair of Z-CoiL's.

She's been a loyal Fred Meyer employee in the garden center for 8 years. After an injury and when arthritis set in her hands she had work only seasonally 4 years ago. She fell into her home rockery 4 years ago and split open her right leg. The hand injury was extensive with many complications in healing. Back injuries make her have a touchy "slippery" disc.

She says, "The leg and back pain cleared up after I started wearing Z-CoiL's. They helped me reduce impact so my back pain went to zero. Z-CoiL's help strengthen my inner core muscles. I feel elated because of the spring in my step." Her interest in the Z-CoiL's was also spurred from a search for a remedy for the pain in the side of her right foot. The muscle stiffness went away with the Z-CoiL's. Massage and orthotics did not seem to help much.

She continues," I refer people to Your 2 Feet 3-6 times a week at Fred Meyer because people ask about them. I sometimes get off the wall comments like-What's with the shoes?. I explain what the Z-CoiL's do for you, how they have helped me over time including the side and bottom of my right foot."

Thanks Judy for being such a loyal customer, for coming from so far, and for showing your friend Pam a way toward better health.

A Winning Strategy: Don't Play Through Pain

Timely treatment and rehabilitation key to proper healing
Sometimes athletes can be their own worst enemy especially when they continue to play following an injury to a foot or ankle. To ensure proper recovery from an injury, athletes should seek a proper diagnosis, prompt treatment and full healing and rehabilitation.

Athletes often misunderstand how serious an injury can be and try to rush back into competition without appropriate treatment and rehabilitation. Some of the most difficult cases seen by foot and ankle surgeons are those in which athletes have continued to play after an injury. Orlando, Florida, foot and ankle surgeon, Robert Duggan, DPM, FACFAS, says, “Athletes often make the mistake of ignoring what seems like a minor foot or ankle injury because they are able to walk. Serious injuries can exist even when the foot or ankle is able to accept weight or pressure.”

One such injury involves the Lisfranc joint, on the top of the foot. It’s possible to walk with a Lisfranc injury, but this can lead to damage to the soft tissues of the foot or even chronic conditions such as arthritis. “Sometimes the pain of this injury is mistaken for an ankle sprain, but treatment for the two conditions is very different,” Dr. Duggan comments.

Another injury that may be overlooked is a fracture of the fifth metatarsal—the bone that runs along the outer side of the foot. This can accompany an ankle sprain, or the athlete may think it’s a sprain. However, this injury is difficult to heal, and continuing to participate in sports will make it worse.

Playing with pain is never a good strategy for athletes. Prompt treatment is. “Foot and ankle surgeons can determine the best course of treatment for the specific injury and help get athletes back into the game,” Dr. Duggan comments.

Toenail fungus treatment

Although toenail fungus can be little bit difficult to treat, there are some treatment options for curing them. Fungal infections on nail are sometimes difficult to be cured you will probably have to take a treatment, sometimes for up to six months, because fungus is found under the nail and can be hard to reach. we must choose the appropriate treatment option so that we immediately get rid of toenail fungus. Here are 6 treatment options that can be selected to treat nail fungus.

1. Oral medications

In the past, Griseofulvin (Fulvicin), a toxic drug, is the only medicine that has recognized the benefits of treating nail fungus infections. Now there are other oral antifungal drugs that can cure toenail infections. These are Itraconazole (Sporanox), Fluconazole (Diflucan) and Terbinafine (Lamisil). These drug help a new nail grow healthy which is free from infections and replaces the infected area of your nail. They are usually taken from six to twelve months and you will not be able to see the results until after the toenail grows back completely.

2. Antifungal Creams and Antifungal Solutions

Antifungal creams are one of the most common toenail fungal treatments. They can be over the counter or prescription medicine which you can apply directly over the infected area of the nails. Antifungal creams are used for mild to moderate stages of toenail fungus infections and can be be combined with oral medications for a more effective cure. Recommendations include using a nail varnish or use tea tree oil that kills the fungal infection. Here at Your 2 Feet, formerly Z-CoiL of Seattle, we stock Gordochom solution and Fungasoap which is Tea Tree Oil offered without a prescription. Often oral Lamisil can be crushed in the Gordochom to make it more potent. This is a prescription you can get from Dr. Kerch. A urea cream applied under occlusion can also battle the fungus over time.

3. Vicks Vapo Rub

Vicks vapo rub has been used to be home remedy for toenail fungus. However, no scientific studies have been showed evidence to validate this claim even if there are some people who said that it is effective to cure nail fungus.

4. Antifungal Nail Polish

For mild to moderate fungal infections, Dr. Kerch or your family podiatrist might prescribe an antifungal nail polish called Ciclopirox. You paint it on your infected toenails as you would an ordinary nail polish. Do this everyday for seven days then wipe it all off and start with fresh applications. Use of Ciclopirox on a daily basis for one year has been shown to cure toenail fungal infections.

5. Surgical Nail Removal

For recurring and severe stage of toenail fungus, surgical nail removal may be the best treatment option. The infected nail is removed and an antifungal cream is used to treat the infected area. Because the area of infection is exposed, antifungal cream can kill toenail fungus more effective.

6. Laser treatment

Currently under consideration by the FDA is a laser treatment that will "resolve" the fungus. It is a this promising new treatment. However the cost is $200-$500 and is not reimbursed by insurance companies. This may be prohibitive to some. It accomplishes the same result as having the nail debrided in the office. It will recur unless the underlying problem at the base of the nail is addressed.

Whichever treatment you prefer to use, will depend on stages of toenail fungus. For beginning stages of toenail fungus, home remedy with topical creams will be okay. However, it is always best to consult your podiatrist to get an accurate diagnosis and best treatment option for toenail fungus.

If you do not already have a podiatrist you can make an appointment with Dr. Kerch.
•If your nail infection doesn’t bother you, you may wish to leave it alone. This option may lead to a spread or worsening of the nail condition.

DR. Kerch's Comments: "Gordochom does not have an "Indication" for the treatment of fungus toenails and it has not been proved to be effective against fungus toenails. I have been told that the manufacturer would have a significant expense to pursue FDA testing in order to obtain this indication. It would not be worth the expense to do so. This being said, I have recommended Gordochom for the treatment of fungus toenails. Please be aware that the antifungal in Gordochom is fungistatic, meaning that it prevents the spread of fungus, but does not kill it. Therefore, since a toenail can take 9 months to a year to grow out, it may take this long to see noticeable improvement. Ironically, Gordochom is indicated for the treatment of athlete's foot, but I hardle ever use it for that. I prescribe crushing three Lamisil tablets into the solution to strengthen the effectiveness."

5 Ways to Combat Knee Pain and Your 2 Feet Products to Help

The knee is a very complex joint, and most of us will experience some kind of knee pain. If you pay special attention to strengthening your core muscles, watching your weight and taking care of your feet, you may be able to ease that pain. Click the title for a link to a helpful article

Your feet are your foundation. When our feet travel straight ahead, the knee joints and hip joints work properly. The problem is that most of us are like cars that are out of alignment. If the foot twists outward or inward as we walk, it pulls our knees, hips and back joints out of alignment. Getting the right shoes and the right support can go a long way toward protecting your knees.

Now You Can Truly Have The Perfect Fit. Your 2 Feet of Seattle Introduces The Somnio Running Shoe

Your 2 Feet, formerly Z-CoiL of Seattle, will be introducing Somnio, the Perfect Fit.

Finding the Perfect Fit

Beyond shoe size and pronation: How to truly customize a shoe

Somnio Running

Somnio is founded on the principle that running shoes should adapt to the individual runner and improve biomechanics. Every runner is different, and we believe that every pair of running shoes should be different, too, so building a platform can make that possible.
The Line Up Measuring Device is a patented fitting tool.
The biomechanic design is a result of a partnership with the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine. The runner stands barefoot upon the Line-Up, and you use the adjustable slides to easily determine:
which footbed fits the runner’s arch
which cushion is appropriate for their weight and running surface
which Varus Wedge inserts best align the foot and lower leg
Step 1: Line-Up Device

Standing barefoot alignment assessment:
The shoe fitter measures Arch height (Low, Normal, High)
Measuring the amount of Pronation (Neutral, Mild, Moderate, Significant) Supinators should be placed in the Runaissance model to encourage any pronation possible
Cushioning select based on body weight.
The runner does a single leg squat on the Line Up Measuring Device:
Fitter adjusts leveling of your feet on Line Up Device
Fitter finds your level of pronation to reach alignment (neutral-mild, moderate, significant pronation).
Runner places heel against heel cup in most comfortable fit, This allows the inherent tibial torsion of the lower leg (degree varies between people) to place the foot naturally vs. forcing the foot straight forward and imposing an internal rotation of the knee/femur.
Fitter lines up laser on middle of patella.
You, the runner, perform a single leg squat (1/3 knee bend) while person looks straight forward so as not to influence alignment results.
You perform a few repetitions of the squat so the fitter can assess typical running patterns.
Step 2: Adjust Varus
The fitter will adjust the Varus using our patented Line-Up device.
The fitter will adjust the balance of the Line Up Device to optimize the alignment of the laser tracking on your patella.
Step 3: Use Arch Ball

In this step we will select your ideal arch height based on:
Archometer
General visual assessment of arch height (Low, Normal, High).
Historical tolerance of arch support (this is determined during your initial questioning).
Right and left can be different.
Step 4: Select Components

We will use the Durometer Gauge, your general weight and the Varus setting to select your correct inserts.
Durometer will initially be based on body weight or injury needs and then be adjusted to accommodate for the intangible “feel” that you are seeking.
Firmer durometer in the forefoot can assist in pronation control.
Individuals that “catapult” from outer heel to excessive pronation may benefit from 45-55 durometer in the heel to slow the speed of transition.
Step 5: Shoe Trial

Place the Functionally Engineered Adaptable Tricomponent [FEAT] System into the shoe.

Shoe Trial

We will use our skills to make specific adjustments to get the best shoe fit. Then we will make any necessary adjustments based on how the shoe actually fits and feels.
Modifications:

Our first priority is addressing any alignment needs with appropriate canting changes.
We will modify the durometer of the inserts to provide a good balance between comfort/feel and injury needs.
Arch Height: This is typically a straight forward decision

How to Choose Your Insole, Arch Support, or Orthotic

Powersteps Get Seal of Acceptance

Products- Superfeet, Lynco Orthotics, Emsold, Powersteps
Everyone's feet are unique, and different activities demand different types of footwear. Taking these variables into account, it's unrealistic to expect one insole to fit every shoe and every foot. That's why you can choose from different styles (Aetrex Lyncos, Superfeet, Powersteps, and Emsold) at Your 2 Feet, formerly Z-CoiL of Seattle, to improve the fit of most of your footwear - whether you walk, run, ski, hike, snowboard, play basketball, or work all day on your feet.
Finding the right size and style is critical to your satisfaction. Foot type, footwear, and activity all play an important role in selecting the proper style and size. Because we cannot take all of these factors into consideration without an evaluation at Z-CoiL of Seattle, we highly recommend visiting us for an I-Step pressure analyses and full evaluation to ensure proper selection and fit of our products. A customized heated orthotic may be fabricated while you wait, if needed. Our in store podiatrist fabricates custom orthotics, if you do not already have a podiatrist, from a mold of your feet at affordable prices as symptoms indicate.
How to Choose Your Insole, Arch Support, or Orthotic
Everybody's feet are different, but everyone can benefit from the support and comfort provided by our top of the line choice of arch supports, insoles and customizable orthotics. Choose from a variety of models designed to fit differently-shaped feet for all types of shoes, activities and sports. Here are some tips to help you choose the right productsfor you.
What foot type are you?
Only 10-15% of the population has what is described as an 'ideal functioning foot'. This is often referred to as a neutral foot. People with a neutral foot have a well-defined shaped foot that doesn't need an orthotic for biomechanical reasons. But they can still benefit from the added shock absorption and cushioning an arch support (orthotic) provides. The 3-dimensional shape around the foot acts like an adapter to fit into the 2-dimensional shaped footwear. This intimate fit provides comfort and improves performance.

The remaining population has a tendency to either excessively pronate or supinate when they stand, walk or run. Besides affecting fit, this can result in secondary foot ailments. If you experience this type of problem, arch supports (insoles) will provide support in the key areas of your foot to help reduce foot problems.

Excessive pronation can cause a flat arch and foot elongation, resulting in plantar fasciitis, bunions, blisters, knee, hip and back pain, and shin splints, among other things. The end result is inefficient motion, which causes low strength and loss of power during toe-off.
A supinated foot can be predisposed to ankle sprains, ligament strains and tears, tendonitis, and poor shock absorption. Overall, arch supports will improve the comfort and fit of the shoe.
What type of footwear are you wearing?
Most types of athletic style footwear come with some type of removable insole. Unfortunately, the soft cushion effect dissipates quickly within the first few days, and the poor support provides little, if any, biomechanical help. Removal of this insole provides ample room to complement your new footwear with any one of our supportive arch supports.
Many types of casual and formal dress footwear have no removable insole and subsequently provide very little room for the addition of an after-market insole. In these instances our low-profile products models are ideal for this type of footwear. They can be trimmed full length, or if need be, trimmed back to a ¾ length. If your footwear is still too tight, we recommend you try one of our L500 Lynco series, Emsold or Trim Fit Superfeet products.
What type of activity are you doing?
Most activities will feel more comfortable with the right insole. If you are a runner or walker, we recommend you try one of our styles designed to provide extra shock absorption. If you are looking for support in a stop-and-start sport like soccer the Blue Superfeet is the way to go. No matter what type of foot you have, what type of footwear you are wearing, or what activity you are doing, our arch supports are the ideal product for you.

Cluffy Wedge Latest Orthotic Innovation

A New Breakthrough in treating Foot Leg and Back Pain
Excellent for Plantar Fascitis (heel pain), Morton's Neuromas, Shin Splints, Bunions, Hammertoes, Ankle, Knee, Hip and Back Pain

Your feet are your foundation. Walking is a complex interplay of 26 individual bones and 33 joints in your foot that affect motion and balance of the rest of your body. If normal foot function is disrupted, then we are forced to compensate, and pain is often the result. The pain is not limited to your feet-it can also affect our ankle, knee, hip and back joints.
Introducing the Cluffy Wedge
In the late 1990's, James Clough, DPM, a podiatrist in Great Falls, Montana, made a ground-breaking discovery. While most of us have some range of motion in our big-toe-joint, Dr. Clough observed that over 80 percent of his adult patients in pain had a big-toe-joint that "locked" when the ball of the foot came in contact with the ground prior to the propulsive, "toe-off" phase of the gait cycle. This condition, medically known as functional hallux limitus (FHL), forces our foot to compensate, usually by twisting outward to navigate around the stiffened big-toe-joint. He also discovered that a small wedge, strategically placed underneath the big toe, provided just enough elevation to "unlock" the big-toe-joint and restore the foot to normal motion.
Our Experience with the Cluffy Wedge at Z-CoiL of Seattle
The results we have seen with the Cluffy Wedge since October 2009 have been nothing short of amazing. When we place the cluffy wedge under a pair of custom or store inserts, we are seeing improved results with plantar fascitis, shin splints, Morton's neuroma pain, knee and hip pain.
Our goal is to test every customer's feet for a locking big-toe-joint and over 90% of our adult customers have this condition. In our opinion, a locking big-toe-joint is normal. It's the price we pay for walking on concrete.
The cluffy wedge has demonstrated success with triathletes, distance runners, and serious exercise enthusiasts. Runners are reporting that common running injuries, such as shin splints are going away. The athletes are reporting better times as their running performance and gait efficiency improves.
Here's What the Experts Are Saying
Dr. Douglas Richie says: " The Cluffy Wedge is the most significant breakthrough in orthotic breakthrough in the past 10 years. This simple innovation improves function in the first ray and enhances the windlass mechanism." Dr. Richie can arguably be called the father of custom made orthotic therapy.
Our in house podiatrist, Dr. Lotchie Kerch, says " There are two things I am on the look-out for after the customer has been fitted with the appropriate shoe style. I want to examine the motion of the great toe joint and check for limb length discrepancy (one leg shorter than the other). The simple solutions of inserting and adjusting a heel lift combined with the cluffy wedge solves a majority of symptoms that people come to get relief from."
More:
By wearing the Cluffy wedge you will notice a change in your gait that makes you feel better at toe-off. This happens because the Cluffy allows more motion in the great toe joint
The Cluffy test we administer in our store will determine if you are a good candidate for the wedge.

Jewel says "The Z-CoiLs Make Everything Not Hurt"

Jewel Martinez-Velasquez bought her first pair of Z-CoiL's 5 years ago. At that time there was a store in Puyallup. Her first pair was a gray Zueco Clog that has since been discontinued. However we have a few left in stock on sale. We had her size so she was happy.

She had her high desert hikers tuned up with a new pair of coils and Insoles. After watching her walk, she needed a coil adjustment. The coil's were turned 90 degrees to correct for her over-pronation. She is unable to wear sandals because of how much she pronates, but then they never turned her coils on the sandals. We'll have to try that out next.

Jewel found out about the Z-CoiL's when she saw someone in Pet Smart wearing them. She was a dog Food Rep at that time for Blue Buffalo-totally natural, holistic, and fit for human consumption.

For the past three and 1/2 years she has worked as a special projects coordinator for Rest Co. She goes into Safeway with a schematic of how things are to be displayed on the shelves. Discontinued items are removed, etc. The company also does projects for other companies such as for J & J. This job involves 10-12 hour days walking on cement.

Her issues are with foot pain. She has progressive degenerative joint disease in her feet, plantar fascitis and she overpronates. She's tried custom made orthotics, but they have not worked. The only thing that has worked are the Z-CoiLs. She says,"It took some breaking them in and she had to learn a new way to walk. Then everything fell into place. I got 100% relief as long as I wear them. I can't walk without my Z-CoiL's."

"People ask me about the shoes all the time. I tell them the benefits are great. The Z-CoiL's absorb the shock so you don't get that jolt up the legs and back. The Z-CoiL's also help to not create problems. The Z-CoiL's make everything not hurt."

It Doesn't Matter How Much They Cost, If They Can Take Away The Pain

Toni Galiirobbins and Robb Robbins have been married for 47 years. They met 52 years ago when he was a 16 year old youngster working as a soda jerk. She was 14 years old when she met him.
Toni worked for 15 years running a daycare. Later she was employed at RJ Reynolds doing sales field work.
Robb was a paid firefighter for 31 years in Oakland, CA and Ashland, OR. He worked construction in gravel, concrete, and mud. The mud in particular made it challenging with the Z-CoiL's until he started wearing galoshes.

Toni had been suffering with heel spurs and plantar fascitis for 4 years under the care of her podiatrist. Nothing worked from injections, custom orthotics, physical therapy, etc.

They saw the Z-CoiL's in a window in a Grant's Pass store 10 years ago. Toni was game for anything that could help her heel pain. One month after wearing her first pair of Z-CoiL's 99% of her pain went away.

Her podiatrist warned her not to wear the Z-CoiL's because he thought they were dangerous. Toni says," Yes , they were dangerous- to his practice! I have never had to go back to him."

Toni has at least 8 pairs of Z-CoiL's-different colors, different styles. A black and a white pair of clogs. The athletic shoe "Freedom 2000" in white, in black, in blue and white. Two pairs of sandals, one in beige/tan, one in black.

Robb has 8 pairs including the pair he bought today-the Z-trek. The Z-trek is a good all around shoe. Robb started wearing them after asking his wife if she thought the Z-CoiL's might help his hip and back pain. His right leg is 3/4 inch shorter than his left. He pronates (rolls in ) more on his right side. After several attempts, the Grant's Pass store was able to find the right coil configuration to work for him. The coils last a long time. He replaces them every 2 years.

Robb now wears an extra large coil on his right side and a medium coil on his left side. He has the right coil turned 90 degrees on most of his shoes. Today we had him try a left XL on his right foot. These modifications help control his pronation and amount the coil descends on walking. He will consider enclosed coils now since swapping right for left XL on his right seems to be helping.

Toni and Robb square dance 2-3 times a week. At conventions they are dancing 4-6 hours a day. The Z-CoiL's help the pain especially on concrete floors. On wood they can get away with cowboy boots some of the time, wearing Z-CoiL's between dances.

Robb says, " I want the Z-CoiL cowboy boots. They will be my next pair."

Toni and Robb," We tell people about them all the time. If they have time, they get the whole story. If not, we give them the abbreviated story. These Z-CoiL's helped what was causing me pain. "

"It doesn't matter how much they cost if they take away the pain. "

Z-CoiL Explained-Click Here

Kid Reporter Port Townsend-Brennan LaBrie Seeks Relief From Z-CoiL

Colleen LaBrie and her son, Brennan visited our store at the corner of Minor and Pine today searching for relief from upper back and neck pain. Brennan suffered a fall 2 weeks ago that has left Brennan suffering with severe back pain. He rates his pain a 9 out of 10 on the pain scale. (Owner, Dr. Lotchie Kerch is pictured with Brennan and Colleen.)
Help from an acupuncturist, chiropractor, and GP has rendered no relief. Advil doesn't touch the pain. "I hurt when I walk, when I swing a door open, when I try to run or ride a bike. I can't do anything without having pain. I have pain all the time."
They had heard of Z-CoiL of Seattle from collaborator Jack Olmsted of Port Townsend. Jack let Brennan and Colleen try on his Size 8 Z-CoiLs last week. Jack is the author of the unofficial blog for Z-CoiL pain relief footwear.
Jack introduced our store, Z-CoiL of Seattle, to the new medium of the blog years before it was popular. Jack has helped Brennan and Colleen advance to the next level in the video realm. They met Jack 5 months ago at a Port Townsend fair event.
Brennan was already on the radar in the journalism world. His newspaper, "Brennan's Spruce St. Weekly" has been published for two years. Since he's 10 years old now, that means his talent for journalism was already blossoming at 8 years old. He does his own jokes, cartoons and hand written articles.
Brennan prefers to report on "good news" in Port Townsend, surrounding communities and Seattle. His other talent is investigative reporting. He sells his newspaper for 25 cents each and has a 250 readership due to word of mouth popularity. There are the farmers to interview; a recent visit by Cloris Leachman gave a rare opportunity; stores opening or closing all make it to the newspaper.
Brennan says, "I love people. Everyone has a good story. I am going to Whistler Village and plan on interviewing the "man in the street" in Vancouver. My curiosity stirs me to ask questions. I catch the look in someones eye and usually always have something to report about."
He continues,"Recently a deer got hit be a car. A loud explosion was heard afterward. Investigative reporting is really fun. I went to the police station to find out what happened to the deer. The officer was reluctant to tell me the deer was shot to stop it from suffering. He thought I would get said so he didn't want to tell me what really happened."
Brennan and Colleen left Z-CoiL of Seattle with the same style of Z-CoiL,the Z-Walker Velcro.
Brennan commented, "I feel better walking in the Z-CoiLs. I think they are great shoes. I especially like the velcro feature of the Z-CoiLs since you can just slip them on and off easier."
Brennan has a great love and passion that makes him a natural for journalism.
To his credits are a Nov 17 interview of Apollo Ohno. Appollo was born in Federal Way, but currently has been training in Salt Lake City. Brie Shaaf is a woman competitor in the 2 man bobsled Olympic event. She lives in Bremerton. She will be giving Brennan a tour of the Olympic Village and the Whistler Sliding Center. This is where the luge, skeleton and bobsled events are being held. I saw Brennan last night on the Evening Show. Today he was live on the King 5 morning news show. He was excited about the experience, " I never had seen the inside of a TV studio before." So much and more for this aspiring young reporter! Visit his blog for more info: brennanlabrie.blogspot.com

Seattle's First Love

Louisa Boren and David Denny

It was the perfect pioneer romance: Nineteen-year-old David Denny and 24-year-old Louisa Boren fell in love on the Oregon Trail in 1851, during the long trek from Illinois. They caught trout together at Soda Springs to feed the hungry party, then fended off a Shoshone brave's attempt to trade horses for Louisa.

Denny, the party's trailblazer, was the first to reach Puget Sound. Dispatched north to scout prospects, he sent back word: "Come at once." On January 23, 1853, David Maynard, the territory's first justice of the peace, joined David and Louisa in Seattle's first wedding ceremony. It kept things all in the family, or families; David's widowed father had already married Louisa's widowed mother, and his older brother was married to her older sister. The mind reels.

David staked out 160 acres at the settlement's wild north end, today's Seattle Center (hence Denny Way). Louisa planted roses, earning the sobriquet "sweet briar bride," and bore eight children. Optimistic and generous, David toiled tirelessly and invested eagerly in every new project-mining, farming, real estate, a sawmill, a streetcar line. He got rich, built a mansion, then lost it all in the Panic of 1893. He and Louisa retreated ever farther into the woods, first to today's Fremont, then to a tiny cabin at Licton Springs, where he died 50 years after they wed.

"I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO WORK WITHOUT MY Z-COILS!"

JoAnn Sherrick has worked at Sam's Club for seven years. Now she is a photo attendant, but for years she was doing demo work. This was very strenuous on her body since the floors are concrete.
Before this job she worked as a waitress for 50 years. She would have liked to stay there, but that was before she learned about Z-CoiLs. The pain she was having made her quit. She suffered a fall at work and sprained her back. She never missed a day until she quit.
Then she fell at the Northgate Mall and shattered her humerus (arm bone). Within a year and a half she had six surgeries to repair that fracture.
She has had severe back pain for 18 years, worsening every year. The diagnoses includes degeneration of the spine, floating and bulging disc, scoliosis, and the spinal nerve endings are exposed. She has arthritis from the neck all the way down the back.
Her doctor states that, since there are so many levels of her back injury, they can't operate. He said "What if it doesn't heal?" Her orthopedists give her pills and send her away.
Things really changed six or seven years ago when she first started wearing the Z-CoiL pain relief footwear. JoAnn says, "I wouldn't be able to work without my Z-CoiLs. I wish I had known about the Z-CoiL's when I was a waitress. I would have been able to continue working at that job if I had worn them."
She continues,"These shoes help so much when I am walking. I tried switching to my Clarks for a walk to the mall. I had so much pain I had to take a break to take my pain pills. I learned my lesson. I used to refuse to wear my Z-CoiLs in certain situations, but I know the Z-CoiL's stop the pain. I don't want that pain back so I wear my Z-CoiL's."
Her first pair of Z-CoiL pain relief footwear were the Freedom Black (athletic shoe) style. About two years later she bought the black Taos Strap ( Mary Jane style). A year ago she purchased the Loryn style.
She has found if she replaces her open coils every year this totally rejuvenates her Z-CoiL pain relief shoes. She bought a new pair of coils today at Z-CoiL of Seattle at the base of Capital Hill. It was not necessary to adjust her Z-CoiL shoes. Most people do not need any custom adjustments, but the Lynco or Superfeet orthotics add an amount of support to the Z-CoiL experience.
JoAnn says, "I used to wear out $120.00 shoes in 3 months. I'm on my feet so many hours that normal shoes just do not last long. My Z-CoiLs last much longer. If you have back or leg pain, these Z-CoiL's help a lot."
JoAnn is a young 72 years old and gives testimony that you can return to work ( if you want to) without pain wearing the Z-CoiL footwear.

Postal Worker's Job Made Painfree

Scott Harris has been a postal worker for the past 30 years. He is planning to retire to the Phillipines in four years. He has property there in Cebu.
About five years ago Scott came to Z-CoiL of Seattle at the base of Capital Hill with an appointment to see the onsite consulting podiatrist Dr. Kerch. He was diagnosed with plantar fascitis and was treated accordingly. Since his pain was so severe he was a candidate for foot surgery.
Scott says, " I was due to go under the knife, but the Z-CoiL Pain Relief Footwear relieved my pain".
"I bought my first pair of Z-CoiL's five years ago. Now I have four pairs. The regular postal shoes last six months. These 4 pairs are the longest lasting shoes I have ever worn. My four pairs are all usable after five years. Even the coils on my shoes, open and enclosed coils, have lasted two years. The Z-CoiL shoes are well worth the money, not even taking into consideration the health benefits."
"I prefer the enclosed coils because wearing the open coils delays me an additional 30 minutes to do my mail route. Not as many people stop me to ask about my shoes when I wear the enclosed coils. When I wore my solar cap and the Z-CoiL shoes, I couldn't even get out of the elevator because of having so many people asking me questions.
-What are those?
I've never seen them before.
Are those the basketball shoes with the springs that strengthen the calf for training? (No, these are mostly therapeutic shoes)
Now I mostly wear the enclosed coils. I have more energy and I am not so worn out at the end of the day-it's like walking on a cloud."
"I'm really satisfied with the Z-CoiL shoes. They are great for walking on concrete."
"I tried the rocker sole type shoes, but they do not have the same effect. Those rocker soles really aren't for plantar fascitis since they lean you back more toward your heels."

Bob Graduated from Dottie's Hand-Me-Downs to His own Z-CoiLs.

Bob Graham visited our store, Z-CoiL of Seattle, from So. Miami. He works for Univision, a Spanish TV network for the past 30 years. He was in town for the soccer match this week-end. It is a MLS- Major League Soccer game, LA Galaxy versus Utah. Featured will be David Beckham and lots of Spanish players. Players from both teams make up the US team competing for the World Cup.
Bob is staying at the Hyatt here in Seattle. Machiavelli's is a couple of doors down from our store. On the way back to the Hyatt after a delicious Italian dinner at Machivaellis, he spotted our store. The next day he came right over for his third pair of Z-CoiL's. He has been wearing Z-CoiL shoes for the past 8 years.
He first saw the Z-CoiL shoes being worn by an ICU nurse in Phoenix 10 years ago.
Bob's wife Dottie started wearing the Z-CoiL shoes first, about nine years ago. Dottie now has 9 pairs of Z-CoiL's: 2 pairs of athletic shoes (Freedom) blue and white and one is all white, Black Mary Jane style, Black clog, and another sneaker type.
Bob got Dottie's hand me downs for 5-6 years. "These shoes just last so long".
Bob purchased his first new pair of Z-CoiL shoes about three years ago.
Last summer Dottie gave away Bob's brown hiking boots to a friend who had very bad shin splints. The shin splints went away. "You can't pry the Z-CoiL's off his feet", Bob said. This friend's wife helped them obtain their first Chinese baby adoption. She was 13 months old at the time of adoption and is now 4 years old. The paperwork is in now for a second Chinese adoption. Bob said, "Being 50 and having a 4 year old child keeps me young."
His previous pair of dress sandals he forgot to put up and the Z-CoiL's got chewed on by their puppy. This left him Z-CoiL-less and on the hunt for a new pair.
Today he is trying out the enclosed coils on a pair of gray hiking boots. After being evaluated on the I-Step machine, he was fitted for a pair of supportive Lynco orthotics. The enclosed coil can be attached to any Z-CoiL style.
Dottie has lower back pain that the Z-CoiL's help eliminate. She worked as a trauma nurse, but now is getting her masters to be a nurse practioner.
When they were in China, the Chinese people were taking pictures of the Z-CoiL footwear. In the US Dottie and Bob are telling people about the Z-CoiL's.
Speaking of China,Audrey S. visited our Z-CoiL store from China while visiting Seattle. She is an ex-patriot. Her mother in Spokane raved about the shoes so much she convinced her daughter to get a pair. Audrey was evaluated on the I-Step Pressue Analysis and was fitted with the Lynco supportive orthotics in her new Z-CoiL brown hikers and two pairs of our great socks that keep you warm while wicking away any moisture on your feet.

40th High School Class Reunion Unites the Brown's With Z-CoiL's

Al and Helen Brown were surprised to see Nancy Chong on stage giving a quilting lesson at Al's 40th Redmond High School reunion in these strange looking shoes.
After Nancy explained how the shoes work to reduce impact on the joints, Al and Helen went to learn more. They bought their first pair at the Bellevue location.
That was six years ago. The store in Bellevue went out of business so they found us for other pairs.
Al owns a pair of brown hikers as well as gray and black hikers. He needed new insoles for the hikers since he wears them so much. In addition to a pair of black freedom athletic shoes, he acquired a pair of Sandias on sale today ( sale limited to overstock on hand).
Helen is just as enthusiastic for Z-CoiL footwear. She owns the black freedom's as well as the white freedom's. Today she bought the Loryn's on sale ( sale limited to overstock on hand).
Helen says the only maintenance she has had to do is obtain a new set of coils four years ago. "These shoes are worth the money since they last so long and help me so much!"
Helen used to have nagging pain in her neck and shoulders. Not only has this pain gone away wearing the Z-CoiL shoes, she notices she stands straighter as well.
"They told us to break the shoes in slowly, but we did not do that. We wore them all the time from the start."
Al is so much better from the pain and stiffness he had in his foot, leg and back since wearing the Z-CoiL pain relief footwear. The burning and numbness in his feet and pain in his legs started after two hours on his feet. Now he goes up and down the stairs with no problems.
"So many people stop us to ask:
Are they comfortable?
Can you jump fences?
What are they for?
I just hand them a card and tell them they are good for foot, leg and back pain."
Al and Helen are building a house at Steven's Pass. They used to be skiers until a couple of years ago. They currently live in Bellevue.

Joe Runs With Relief

Joe Etchart lives in Montana and came to our store recently while visiting our fair city.

Joe bought his blue and white Freedom 2000 (athletic shoes) eight or ten years ago.

These are the only shoes he is able to run in that don't bother his knees. He bought the Z-CoiL's in Albuquerque after his family told him about them. At that time the old location for the Z-CoiL corporate store was in Albuquerque it is now in a bigger store in a new location) . He was pleased with the service since his gait was analyzed for the need of any coil adjustment.
He had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and open surgery on his left knee. The knee trouble made it hard for him to run until he found the Z-CoiL Pain Relief Footwear. Now he runs five miles a day.
The maintenance of the footwear includes replacing the coils for new ones every so often. This is accomplished by unscrewing the old coils and screwing in the new coils.

When his kids were younger he wore the Z-CoiL's to their track meets. Many folks asked about them and he told them they work for him.
"Exercise is very important to me and without the Z-CoiLs I wouldn't be able to do it."have been the only thing that works for me to keep me active".

Joe is involved in ranching, manages real estate and is on the Board of Directors of Alpine Air, a regional freighter airline.
